A little information about Pho Cafe our sponsors.

  • Westfield Shopping Centre, Shepherds Bush
  • Black Lion Street, Brighton
  • Wardour Street, Soho

Burt’s summary

Pho is my favourite London restaurant, it’s run by nice people, they sell healthy yet delicious spicy food and have some great locations some really convenient for getting back to Euston.

Some well written marketing copy lifted from their web site

Pho opened in Clerkenwell in June 2005 as London’s first Vietnamese street food restaurant. We’re family run, small, informal and serve great value, deliciously healthy and authentically prepared Vietnamese food in an environment we hope you will enjoy.

We specialise in the Vietnamese national dish, pho, an amazingly tasty and nutritious noodle soup, as well as other wonderful Vietnamese foods, coffees (served Vietnamese style including the renowned weasel coffee! ), beers and fresh juices.

We now have 4 restaurants in London and one restaurant in Brighton.

At Pho we keep it simple

Our specialised menu focuses on a small number of Vietnamese street foods and ensures that we have the time to make everything in-house from the highest quality ingredients delivered daily.

Unlike traditional Vietnamese restaurants in London we don’t serve any Chinese dishes or offer a mind boggling menu of choices. We don’t buy in pre-packaged processed meatballs and frozen spring rolls – instead our Vietnamese chefs make everything using authentic recipes.

Pho [fuh] is Vietnam’s national dish.  It’s their national obsession – often referred to as the “soul of the nation”. It’s quite simply a delicious and nutritious noodle soup dish eaten every day by the Vietnamese for breakfast, lunch or dinner – or sometimes for all. It’s the ultimate street food.

Pho (in fact the vast majority of our menu) is really good for you. Just as in Vietnam our stocks are made from scratch and take many hours to prepare – it’s this authentic preparation that’s key to the stock retaining all its goodness and developing its subtle and distinctive taste. So it’s extremely healthy, brimming with fresh ingredients and very low in fat. The perfect comfort food, hangover cure or cold remedy.

If you are interested in sponsoring next years competition drop Burt an email. Typically we require seeds, compost, beer and food.

On Sunday we peddled for the puppies

July 30th, 2010 by Chairman · Berkhamsted, Charity, Chilli Society

The current total raised (including Gift Aid, to make it sound more impressive) is £570.21.

If you would like to support the worthy Break Through Breast Cancer cause you can donate at our Just Giving page.

Start to finish took 5 hours 10 minutes . 3 hours 51 minutes was spent cycling the rest of the time was extended toilet breaks due to Tims as he was wearing some sort of lycra mankini wrestling out fit under his T shirt which meant he wasn’t prepared to publicly pee in a bush so he queued like a lady waiting for the toilet at the opera.

There was some over lap with the Chilli Growers and Team Leesman so we joined forces.

The ladies from The Berkhamsted Knitting Circle laid on a terrific spread to refuel the exhausted cyclists.

After lining our stomachs we rushed back to Berkhamsted as we had a meeting that night in The Boat. Aunty Dee nearly got slapped by an old drunk bloke whose ASBO Mrs got the hump with his arrogance before she stormed off in a strop, which makes a pleasant change from fighting amongst ourselves.

We also met the nice manager of the Old Mill and discussed using our chilli’s in their menu later in the summer.

The BCGS have donated a Serano plant grown from a Wahaca seed to Victoria School Promises Auction

May 5th, 2010 by Chairman · Charity, Chilli Society, Growing Chilli's

We don’t like to talk about our charity work BUT we’ve donated a Serano chilli plant to the VSA promise auction. Maybe we should plant someone to bid it’s price up.

Serano Chilli Plant

Grown from seed in fertile Berkhamsted by the Berkhamsted Chilli Growing Society.

The Serano Chilli originates from mountainous regions of the Mexican states of Puebla and Hidalgo. The Serano is a prolific producer of bullet shaped fruit which resembles the Jalepeno pepper but they are notably hotter.

Serano seeds are given to diners at Wahaca restaurants across London.

chilli, chili, chile or chilly

April 30th, 2010 by Flicker · Chilli Society, Growing Chilli's

As promised, I emailed the Plain Language Commission – here is the ever-helpful Sarah’s reply:

chilli, chili, chile or chilly

The first three are alternative spellings for a pepper or a peppery vegetable discovered in the New World. In Britain and Australia the primary spelling is chilli, which is believed to render the original Mexican word most exactly. But in American and Canadian English, the spelling chili is given preference and often featured in the spicy Mexican dish chili con carne. The actual Spanish form of the word is chile, hence its use in chile con carne, in parts of the US where Spanish is better known.
The fourth spelling above is a separate word meaning ‘rather cold’ in all varieties of English. But in British English it’s yet another possible spelling for the pepper, according to the Oxford Dictionary (1989).

So, as with other spelling variants, it wouldn’t be right for us to say there’s only one correct spelling, but I would suggest that chilli (as spelt in your society’s name) is your safest bet. As my Oxford Dictionary gives the only plural form as chillies, with the ‘e’, I’d go for that too (though the British National Corpus shows about the same number of entries for ‘chillis’, so you’re obviously not alone in finding the ‘e’ superfluous).

___________________________________________________

So there you are. It would appear there is a choice – but we may have made the correct one!

Yet another reason to eat chilli

April 28th, 2010 by Flicker · Growing Chilli's

It’s in the Nationals – it must be true:

Let’s not get too excited though – am guessing the theory breaks down when the chillis are included in a chicken tikka masala balti, keema nan, rice and onion bhajii combo – all washed down with 5 pints of Kingfisher.

As an aside: I note that the Torygraph has plumped for the ‘chillies’ plural. Personally I would have chosen ‘chillis’ as I think the ‘e’ is superfluous. Think I may email the Plain Language Commission for a view!

The Berkhamsted Fun Run 2010

March 7th, 2010 by Chairman · Berkhamsted, Charity, Chilli Society

Once upon a time in a land far far away (from Londonium) a group of dedicated chilli growers, known locally as Ye Olde Berkhamsted Chilli Growing Society, got up early one bright and frosty morning to run a jovial five miles to help raise funds for a worthy community project know as Ye Berkhamsted Astro Project.

They had great plans of much Stella time, merriment, feasting (well Porkie/Chubby Cheeks/Chilliman/Notaflicker* did) and dancing late into the night but after the gruelling five miles they just needed a long rest and an early night.

* Delete where appropriate

Some of them gathered round Burt and Doris’s house.

Long suffering old Burt got extra earache and another hoovering demonstration after one of his crew left mud all over her floors.

Porkie/Chubby Cheeks/Chilliman/Notaflicker* left a large trail of crumbs, Burt is taking Doris to Costco in the morning hoover shopping.

* Delete where appropriate

Neal yet again demonstrating his desire to cross dress, I can’t work out if he’s wearing his wife’s underwear this time or not.

Probably not the best advert for Hendersons Relish a fatty in a tutu.

En route to the start line the paparazzi were beginning to annoy some of our high profile junior members. For our next outing we’ll hire a stretched Hummer with privacy glass.

At the Berkhamsted Cricket Club we picked up a few more chilli growers.

We were only let down by a few members who, rumour had it, had locked themselves in a cupboard to avoid the run.

The view of a focused runner who doesn’t like carrots much.

Porkie/Chubby Cheeks/Chilliman/Notaflicker* seconds before he took a tactical dive outside a curry house to avoid breaking into a sweat.

That’s a ruddy big hill that is and that’s swearing. The upskirt view wasn’t great either.

A focused chilli growing runner keeping his mind focused on reaching his goal. With that technique I think he could run marathons.

If you’ve ever wondered what happened to Shergar, he got old and into cross dressing.

Thankfully some of us did actually finish (Porkie/Chubby etc notwithstanding). Recognise those 2 sneaking past at the back!

Thanks to all everyone that donated to our wonderful cause and shame on those of you that stiffed us (bloody Aston Clinton Chilli Growing Society), however if you would like to donate to our worth cause visit out Just Giving page here.

We are supporting Berkhamsted Raiders Astro Project by doing their Fun Run

January 18th, 2010 by Chairman · Charity, Chilli Society

We don’t like to mention our charity work, but The Berko Chilli Growing Society are doing a 5 mile (which is quite a lot for some of us old timers) fun run on March 7th.

The fun run is to raise money for the BerkoAstro Project, a community project for Berkhamsted to deliver a full-sized floodlit all-weather pitch and changing facilities.

Please sponsor our sweat and blisters at http://www.justgiving.com/berkhamstedchilligrowingsociety

I think we’ll need a drink afterwards.

Burt Bailey carries out another Gordon spot check

January 13th, 2010 by Chairman · Chilli Society, Competitions, Growing Chilli's

Today Burt carried out a random spot check to see if Gordon the Trophy was being displayed with the pride he deserves. Once again Neal’s wife had hidden the trophy out of view.

How can she hide Gordon and leave that ugly tat on display is beyond us

Burt soon moved him back in full view but for how long?

Mid December meeting in The Goat

December 19th, 2009 by Chairman · Berkhamsted, Chilli Society, Competitions, Growing Chilli's, Meetings

Pool with Jimmy White

Rich was playing pool against Jimmy “Whirlwind in the Jungle” White the day after our meeting so he suggested we held our meeting in The Goat as it’s the only pub in Berkhamsted with a pool table.

We admired his optimism that an hours practice would make any difference.

The Jimmy White experience led onto our 2nd Caption Competition (best not mention the 1st one).

Secret Santa

Top of the agenda was the Secret Santa.

Most of us was there with just a couple missing. The Secret Santa gifts was dominated by Borat Mankinis. 3 out of 10 presents were mankinis  which probably says something disturbing about the society.

Our society transvestite and Apple Mac owner Neal missed the meeting, as he was in Berlin to discuss his operation. Later he received knickers and fishnet tights from his favourite shop Big Bloomers.

Thankfully we haven’t any photographs of him modelling them (yet)!

The Seeds

For the 2010 Berkhamsted Chilli Growing Society Best Bush competition we are all growing the same type of plant,  The Apache Chilli.

Burt distributed the seeds amongst the Society Members. Let the battle for Gordon (the trophy) commence.

Burt invested in a box of elephant poo to germinate his chilli seeds as every seasoned chilli grower knows elephant poo is the business.

Spot check on Gordon

As Neal was away in Paris, on Tuesday, Burt carried out a spot check to see if Gordon was being displayed with pride.

As suspected Neal’s, evil Gordon hating wife, had hidden Gordon away strategically positioned so he could only be viewed from a certain acute angle.

Neal assures us he’s living a constant battle moving Gordon to a prominent position but his wife keeps tucking him away out of sight.

Snow

On Thursday Berkhamsted was blessed with 5 inches or so of snow.

The schools were cancelled and some society members decided to work from home.
